Mekong Delta Vietnam Attractions: Tien Giang Province

Located in the north of the Tien River, Tien Giang Viet nam is a province in the Mekong River Delta. It borders Long An Province and Ho Chi Minh City to the north and northeast, Dong Thap Province to the west, and the South China Sea to the east. It is referred to as a rice basket in the Mekong River Delta and the country’s largest fruit producing area. Tien Giang has rich aquatic supply including freshwater fish, brackish fish, and saltwater fish. Moreover, Tien Giang still preserves historical sites, such as Vinh Trang Pagoda and Go Thanh Oc Eo Vestiges. Coming here, visitor will have chance to discover the beauty of Mekong Delta Vietnam as well as the long history of this land. Here are some places of interest in Tieng Giang that you should not miss:


1. Truong Dinh Temple

Truong Dinh, born in 1820 in Quang Ngai, province in Central Vietnam, got married to a southern woman in Tien Giang province in South Vietnam and settled at his wife’s native village. He was the first person to defoliate waste land in order to set up new hamlets in Tan Hoa District (now Go Cong Town). He was nominated for the post of an administrator. During the years of his resistance against the French colonial rule, he commanded the people to uprise and make the enemy terrified out of his wits.

But because of Huynh Cong Tan’s betrayal, Truong Dinh killed himself on August 20th 1864. The people buried him at Go Cong town. Now, The historical site of Truong Dinh includes a monument and a temple situated at Go Cong town. His tomb was built from laterite with special paste called “O Duoc” in Vietnamese on the surface of 67 m2. The face of the stele engraved with “ Great Vietnam with a great general of genius, who was awarded with the fifth Merit Medal and a duke, Trung Dinh’s stele”. Truong Dinh temple is not only a historical site, but also a style of structure of a tomb symbolizing for the people of South Vietnam.

2. Thoi Son Island
The Thoi Son Island, accessible by a 45-minute boat ride on the Mekong River from Mytho City, is located in Chau Thanh District. The path through the island is bordered with fruit trees bearing plums, mangoes, and longans.

Since 1990, Thoi Son has become a tourist resort welcoming hundreds of visitors. The tiled-roof houses surrounded by many generations of fruit-bearing trees, the cozy little restaurants in bonsai tree gardens make of Thoi Son Island the ideal location for a short rest.The path through the island is bordered with fruit trees bearing plums, mangoes, and longans. Visitors will also enjoy Con Phung Island, and coconut sweets and jams.
3. Vinh Trang Pagoda

Tourists visiting the city of My Tho in Tien Giang Province could not miss Vinh Trang Pagoda, an ancient southern architectural gem. The pagoda is located in My Phong Commune, which is three kilometers from the city center. It was built in 1849 by a Buddhist monk named Hue Dang using funds collected from practitioners. The religious site was seriously damaged by French colonists in 1861 and a severe storm in 1904. On both occasions, practitioners restored the pagoda to its original splendor.

According to locals, a monk named Minh Dan and an architect named Huynh Tri Phu traveled to Cambodia prior to building the pagoda for inspiration and eventually combined Khmer architecture with European styles for the pagoda.
The pagoda houses 60 precious statues made from copper, wood and terracotta. The most valuable collection is the 18 arhats made from jackfruit tree wood in 1907. Additionally, the pagoda has a bell that was cast in 1854. It is surrounded by gardens of ornamental trees, ancient trees and bonsai, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Vinh Trang pagoda provided shelter for Vietnamese patriots and is recognized as a national historical and cultural relic by the government.


4. Ca Be Floating Market


Cai Be, one of the many well-known floating markets in the western region of southern Vietnam was formed in the Nguyen Dynasty in the 19th century. The Cai Be Floating Market is always busy, bearing all the characteristics of the locals’ life in the western region. All the goods are transported to the market by rafts and boats.
The floating market lies in the Tien River, adjacent to three provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long and Ben Tre. The market is divided into two parts: buying and selling places. Rafts Phung Hiep Floating Market and boats are anchored along the two sides of the river for kilometres. Approximately 400 to 500 boats filled with fruits, vegetables, and other products are anchored along the banks of the river. The merchandise sold in each boat is hung on a pole in front of the boat to attract customers. From the floating market, goods are shifted for selling at inland markets or small boats take them for delivery along canals in the Plain of Reeds.

From three 3.00 am in the early morning, rafts and boats are crowded because Cai Be is one of the biggest wholesale markets in the region. Traders live on the river and some link their lives with boats like their mobile house for generations. Cai Be seems to be an inseparable part of their daily lives. On each boat, goods are hung on poles that are called dialectically “cay beo”. Hundreds of such poles point the sky wards. Boats also operate like “taxis,” very convenient for tourists around the region. Along the criss crossing canals, people in the Plain of Reeds take not only goods of each countryside to the Cai Be Floating Market but also their unique cultural characteristics, creating such a beautiful river painting.

5. Dieu Hoa Temple
